INFORMATION:
Classification:
Melanotaeniidae
Origin:
Comes from Australia.
It is found in a variety of habitats, including swamps, ponds, lakes and rivers, although it is most commonly seen in streams and tributaries. Most of these biotopes are subject to seasonal changes in temperature, water level and dissolved sediments. Fish are often found under the cover of aquatic vegetation or other debris, such as submerged logs.
Its form is:
Mature males are larger and exhibit brighter coloration than females. They also develop a much deeper body than females as they grow and develop longer dorsal and anal fins. Populations from the Pascoe, Claudie and McIvor Rivers of Queensland do not develop the characteristic deep-body shape.
Its size is:
Its maximum size is 15 cm
Parameters required:
PH: between 6.5 and 8.0
Temperature can range between 24ºC and 33ºC
Aquarium volume required:
Requires at least 110 liters
This species, like most rainbows, is most at home in a planted aquarium. Provide areas of dense vegetation, along with some open areas for swimming. Water movement can be slow or moderate, although live plants often prefer little or no movement.
Feeding:
A good diet for Melanotaenia trifasciata can be uncomplicated and will accept most dry, frozen and live foods. Regular feeding of the latter will ensure the best coloration.
Example of food that you can buy at Firemouth Aquaristic is:
- Dry feeding type: Insect Nature , Viformo and Immunpro Nature
Behavior:
It is a very peaceful species, but can bother smaller or slow-moving fish with its rapid movements and relatively large size. Good tank mates include other similarly sized rainbowfish, characins, danios, barbs, freshwater gobies, and catfish such as Corydoras.
