When we set up an aquarium, we obviously want to get a healthy aquarium, with healthy plants that is attractive to the eye and not give the image of a neglected aquarium. It is important not to focus on killing the algae, but on the cause that is causing its growth and development and thus we will be able to eradicate them.
Do you know what algae are? They are known as aquarium weeds, plant-like organisms that can limit the space for our fish and end up covering the main plants and decorative objects such as rocks or logs in our aquarium. See source images
I'm going to talk to you about 6 types of algae and how you can eradicate them individually:

filamentous algae

  • Manual removal of everything possible
  • Reduce light
  • Adjust nitrates and phosphates
  • Add fast growing plants

Cyanobacteria

  • Reduce light completely
  • Perform water changes
  • Siphon the bottom

brush seaweed

Add Co2
  • Manual removal of everything possible
  • Cut leaves at the base
  • Add iron and correct phosphates if they are high
  • Reduce current / clean aquarium
  • Reduce KH if the water is too hard

Algae spots on the glass

  • Clean the glass with a magnet
  • Adjust phosphates and nitrates
  • Diatoms

  • Perform water changes with osmosis water
  • Excess silicates
  • Green water

    • UVC light will eradicate it in a few days
    • Adjusts nitrates and phosphates
Lighting: In many cases we see excess hours of light or lights with an inappropriate spectrum. Daily light should not exceed, as a general rule, 8 hours a day. You should start with a progressive light and increase it if you check that everything is working correctly. Make sure you choose good lighting suitable for your aquarium. Consult a professional to give you several options and let them advise you on the one that best suits your budget and project.
Remember: it is not good for the aquarium to receive direct sunlight at any time, as this causes algae.
Maintenance: With the help of a scraper, we can leave the windows clean if they have been affected by algae. Vacuum up as much algae as possible with the help of a siphon since if you don't remove them, they will reproduce. Take a look at the gravel in your aquarium and if it is very affected, you will need to change the water even more regularly, almost daily for a few days. Don't forget to clean the filter regularly.
Abundant planting: this is one of the techniques that has worked the most for me and starting with many plants, since the more plants, the more stable the environment. Use fast-growing plants in abundance, this way we will leave the algae without food, and we eliminate them easily. If it gets out of hand, you can later prune it to your liking. You can use floating plants as they will help stop excess light on the surface.
Use Flourish Excel : it is a fertilizer that provides a carbon source to your plants and is also an algaecide that helps eradicate them. You can use one cap per 40 liters in the first dose (5ml) and from the second dose onwards, 5ml per 200 liters daily to ensure maintenance.

If you follow all these tips, it should not be a problem to achieve a balanced and healthy system in your aquarium.
