The sera 2024 annual calendar not only has a modified design, but for the first time it will not be available for free.
In Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Portugal, fans of aquariums, terrariums and garden ponds, and those who want to become one, will be able to purchase the calendar with impressive photos of the sera community. one euro. All income generated goes entirely to species conservation projects around the world. sera not only covers the costs of manufacturing, production and distribution, but also offsets VAT, so that every penny reaches the places where it is needed.
What projects are supported?
The three species conservation projects featured below will each receive 20% of the proceeds:
1. Conservation of mexclapiques (Goodeidae) – Goodeid Working Group (GWG)
The GWG is an international association of private aquarists, zoos and institutes dedicated (among other things) to the conservation of endangered mexclapiques. In the context of the various GWG projects, fish are not only reproduced, but also reintroduced (already very successfully). The donation will go to the University of Morelia (Mexico) and will be used entirely for conservation and reintroduction projects of mexclapiques.
2. Implementation of breeding centers for endangered freshwater fish in Vietnam – Cologne Zoological Park
The second project is managed by the Cologne Zoo. The main objective of the species conservation project is the implementation of breeding centers for endangered freshwater fish in Vietnam. Prof. Dr. Thomas Ziegler, director of the Cologne Zoological Park aquarium and coordinator of nature protection projects, has been dedicated to the protection of nature and species for decades.
3. Amphibian Breeding and Conservation Center – Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum in Dusseldorf
Due to habitat loss, environmental pollution and deadly amphibian chytrid fungi, there are hundreds of amphibian species around the world that are in serious danger of extinction and some have already disappeared irretrievably. To prevent the extinction of more species, the Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum in Dusseldorf runs a breeding and conservation station for amphibian species. In this center, species threatened with extinction are raised to preserve them for future generations.
What happens to the remaining 40% of the donations?
The remaining 40% of the proceeds will be donated to various regional projects throughout Europe.
For example, purchasing the calendar supports an Italian project dedicated to conserving the last Adriatic sturgeons (Acipenser naccari). Thus, animals are bred regularly and released into the wild to maintain and increase the wild population.
Another part of the proceeds goes to Portugal, to the "Oceanário de Lisboa", to support various nature conservation projects, which of course are always related to water and fish. This includes research and conservation of various cartilaginous fish in European waters, such as manta rays, marbled rays and angel sharks. But the focus is also on such popular sea creatures as octopuses and seahorses; Also in this case, the Lisbon Oceanário is committed to the protection of natural habitats.
In the Iberian Peninsula, more specifically in Spain, there is also the "Aquarium of Zaragoza". Several species of fish that are in serious danger of extinction, some even extinct in the wild, are reproduced and preserved for future generations here. But several national projects dedicated to the conservation of threatened biotopes in Spain are also supported.
