de*nitrate™ is a natural, porous and economical material with a porosity distribution and geometry that promotes both aerobic nitrification (in the first few millimeters of depth) and anaerobic nitrification at its heart.
The material has a very high surface area and supports a high bacteria density.
Because it's different?
Although de*nitrate™ can trap nitrate directly, as can other materials that retain nitrate, such as certain zeolites and certain synthetic resins, this effect is very limited and the primary mechanism of nitrate removal is anaerobic.
Reef rocks (or “live rock”) remove nitrate through anaerobic nitrification. de*nitrate™ due to the aerobic process that occurs on its surface. However, excessive flow should be avoided as it may prevent the development of an anaerobic environment suitable for de-nitrifying bacteria.
de*nitrate™ is also an excellent support for aerobic filtration and that makes it an ideal filter medium for drip trays, external bottle filters, sumps, or even internal box filters.
At high water flow rates (more than 400 liters per hour), it functions only as an aerobic filter.
With slow flow rates (less than 200 liters per hour), it works as both an aerobic filter and an anaerobic nitrification filter.
