Emperor Tetra

INFORMATION:

Classification:

Characiformes | Characidae

Origin:

Endemic to the San Juan and Atrato river basins in Colombia with type locality 'Condoto, Río Condoto and Novita, Río Tamana, southwest Colombia'.

Its form is:

Males are larger, more colorful, and develop much more extended dorsal, anal, and caudal fins as they mature. It is one of the few species of characins in which the central ray of the caudal fin is also elongated. Males also have blue irises, while females have green irises.

Its size is:

35 – 42mm.

Parameters required:

PH: between 5.0 and 7.5

Temperature can range between 23ºC and 27ºC

Aquarium size:

An aquarium with base dimensions of 90 * 30 cm or equivalent should be the smallest considered.

Feeding:

A good diet can consist of:

- Dry food type: Vipan baby and Immunpro Mini Nature

Behavior:

One of the best tetras for the "general" community setting. It is lively, peaceful and its colors offer a pleasant contrast to those of many other species. It makes a good tank companion for the more commonly available lifebearers, danionines, rasboras, other tetras and peaceful bottom dwellers such as Corydoras or smaller Loricariids.
It can also be kept with most commonly available gouramis and dwarf cichlids. Obviously not safe for larger species that may see it as food. In a South American themed tank as described above, it can be combined with other peaceful tetras, pencil fish, Apistogramma and other dwarf cichlids.
