INFORMATION:
Classification:
Order: Siluriformes
Pimelodus bufonius
Origin:
It is found in the rivers of northeastern South America from Lake Maracaibo to eastern Brazil.
Its form is:
Male fish have a pointed genital papilla.
Its size is:
Between 5 and 7 cm
Parameters required:
PH: between 5.8 and 7.2
Temperature can range between 24-28°C
Aquarium size:
This nocturnal bottom dweller requires a spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate to protect its sensory barbels. There should be plenty of hiding places/visual barriers between driftwood, rock caves, PVC pipes/pots, and sturdy plants. The more hiding places provided, the more likely the catfish will venture out, as it will know it has safe places to retreat quickly if it feels the need.
Feeding:
A good diet for Pseudopimelodus bufonius bred can consist of a varied selection of meaty foods. You can take:
- Canned food type: Bloodworms , Mysis and Krill
- Dry feeding type: Insect Nature
Behavior:
These fish are best kept alone, as territorial aggression increases (particularly in males) as the fish mature. Tank mates should be chosen carefully, as the giant bumblebee catfish is highly predatory and will consume fish of almost the same size. It is best to house fish that are 25-50% larger than catfish. Large armored catfish, sizable cichlids, and adult silver dollars could all be considered good companions, but watch them carefully.
