Rineloricaria aurata is known from the Paraguay River basin in Paraguay and Brazil, and from the Guaporé River in Brazil. In Paraguay, this species was collected along with specimens of R. lanceolata and Farlowella paraguayensis along the Jejuí and Piribebuy drainages associated with plant leaves partially submerged in small streams with clear, flowing waters.Its form is:
Sexual dimorphism. Dissected females with mature oocytes at approximately 57 mm SL. Males show sexually dimorphic odontodes at approximately 64 mm SL.
Reproductive male specimens with hypertrophied odontodes arranged on the lateral margins and the dorsum of the head, predorsal plates and dorsal region of the rays of the pectoral fins, premaxillary and dentary teeth that have their mesial cusp enlarged and rounded.
