Aquatic plant, perennial.
Leaves generally aerial, 30 x 12 cm, alternate, ovate elliptical to lanceolate, with the base subcordate or truncated, sometimes cuneate and with the apex cuneate.
The flowers are hermaphroditic, and appear gathered in panicles and less often in clusters or umbels. The calyx is formed by 3 sepals and the corolla by as many petals, 3.5 - 6.5 mm, white, sometimes with purple tones.
It has 6 stamens, with elliptical anthers, and an ovary with 11 - 28 carpels each with a seminal primordium, from which 3 styles emerge of equal length or slightly longer than the ovary, filiform, more or less erect and of which the superior functions as stigma.
The fruit is an achene of 2 - 3 mm, laterally compressed, ovobate to cylindrical and with a small ventral peak.
It blooms from June to September.
