Most of our gravel comes completely clean. However, we recommend rinsing the gravels with water before use to remove any remaining dust and prevent buoyancy of particles in the filling water.
You can easily test whether a gravel is inert or will change pH and hardness slightly. Simply place a few drops of vinegar on the rock. If the vinegar (a base substance) bubbles or foams, it indicates that the gravel contains some calcium.
Gravels containing calcium can alter pH and kH. This can be especially pronounced if you have acidic water or CO2 addition. You can easily control it by regular water changes with osmotic or soft water. You can also use a water softener.
We strongly recommend that you mix different sizes to create depth in your aquarium. Doing so will also make you look more natural.
