Hell sand is a dark colored sand that looks very natural and very similar to the types of silt and mud substrates we find in aquatic habitats. This sand would be ideal for a biotope aquarium representing lakes, rivers, pools and streams of the Amazon, West Africa or tropical Asia.
Its slightly reddish tint will add warmth and depth to the display, while the mix of grain sizes not only makes it look natural, but allows for easy seeding and allows fish such as cichlids and catfish to dig or sift through it. It could also be used to great effect in an aquascape, especially when combined with bright green plants.

All of our sands are pre-washed, although we recommend rinsing the sands with water before use to remove any dust and remaining particles to prevent buoyancy of the particles in the filling water.
You can easily test whether any sand is inert or will change pH and hardness slightly. Simply place a few drops of vinegar on the sand. If the vinegar (a base substance) bubbles or foams, it indicates that the sand contains some calcium.
Sands containing calcium can alter pH and kH. This can be especially pronounced if you have acidic water or CO2 addition. You can easily control it by regular water changes with osmotic or soft water. You can also use a water softener.
