INFORMATION:
Classification:
Order: Cypriniformes
Family: Cyprinidae
Origin:
Probably endemic to central and southern Sumatra, with records from Borneo corresponding to congeners. Additional records exist from the Indragiri, Batang Hari and Musi river systems in the provinces of Riau, Jambi and South Sumatra, respectively.
The type locality is 'Lahat, Palembang Province, Sumatra, Indonesia', which corresponds to the current Lahat Regency in Sumatera Selatan Province (South Sumatra).
Wild populations derived from aquarium stocks also exist in several other territories, including Singapore, Australia, the United States, Colombia and Suriname.
Its form is:
Adult males tend to be smaller, thinner, and have a more intense color pattern than females.
Its size is:
50-60mm
Parameters required:
PH: between 5.0 and 8.0
Temperature can range between 20ºC and 26ºC
Aquarium size:
The base dimensions of 80 * 30 cm or equivalent should be the smallest considered.
Feeding:
- Canned food type: Mysis , Brine shrimps
- Dry feeding type: Vipan Baby
Behavior:
That said, it is relatively boisterous and is not an ideal companion for shy, slow-moving or long-finned species, such as many livebearers, cichlids and anabantoids.
Robust fish that inhabit similar biotopes in the wild, especially pelagic cyprinids of comparable size, may be the best options, but other options include balitorid, cobitid, and nemacheilid loaches, as well as benthic cyprinids such as Crossocheilus or Garra species. If geography is not an issue, many rainbow fish and tetras are also suitable, but be sure to thoroughly research your options before purchasing.
It is a gregarious species that forms loose hierarchies, with rival males continually fighting each other for the attention of females and hierarchical position within the group.
A group of at least 8-10 specimens should be considered the minimum purchase, as this increases the likelihood that the fish will be distracted by each other rather than their tank mates and will result in a more natural looking display. Males will also show better coloration in the presence of conspecific rivals.
