All components of the Crested Gecko Habitat Kit are based on knowledge gained during the Crested Gecko Expedition in combination with captive breeding information from well-known Crested Gecko breeders. The background included in the kit is a copy of a tree trunk covered in lianas and full of lichens and mosses that we found in the Crested Gecko's habitat. The Totem Ornament is unique and reflects the spirit of the culture of the indigenous Kanak people, their sacred totem statues are found throughout the islands. The Kanak Totem Ornament also serves as a hiding cave, water bowl, and feeder for the Exo Terra Diet Crested Gecko.
Crested Gecko Expedition
In January 2013 the Exo Terra Expedition team headed to New Caledonia, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. This archipelago is home to the well-known Crested Gecko, one of the most cared for gecko species in captivity today. The goal of the expedition was to learn about the natural history of the Crested Gecko and collect relevant data to get a better idea on how to successfully keep and breed these unique geckos. The Expedition team explored the jungle by day to locate the Crested Gecko's habitats, and returned at night to study its behavior in its natural environment. Wherever Crested Geckos were found, temperature and humidity were measured, soil/substrate samples were taken, and ripe fruits and flowers were searched for that may be part of the Crested Gecko's diet.
