Origin:
Endemic to the upper and middle basin of the Orinoco River in Colombia and Venezuela (states of Amazonas, Apure, Guárico and Bolívar). It has been collected from several major tributaries, including the Atabapo, Guaviare, Inirida, Ventauri, Meta, Cinaruco, Arauca, Apure, Capanaparo and Caura rivers.
The type locality was originally given as 'Leticia, Peru', but was later corrected to 'Río Muco, upper part of the Orinoco River basin, Colombia' by Géry (1966).
Its form is:
Adult males develop extended dorsal and anal fins, while females have a deeper body.

30 – 35mm

Aquarium size:
An aquarium with base dimensions of 80 * 30 cm or equivalent should be the smallest considered.
Feeding:
It is likely omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, filamentous algae, fallen fruits and the like in the wild.
A good diet for Red Ghost Tetra can consist of:

Behavior:
Very peaceful, making it an ideal resident of the well-researched community aquarium.
Perhaps best kept together with similarly sized characids, gastropelecids, lebiasinids, smaller callyctid or loricariid catfishes, and small to medium-sized non-predatory cichlids.
Try to buy a mixed group of at least 8-10 specimens, as this species forms temporary dominance hierarchies within which males compete for the attention of females and therefore show more interesting behavior and better coloration when kept in number.
